My heart bled when i read about the the so called facebook prophet http://www.thezimbabwemail.com/zimbabwe/12952-zimbabwean-pastor-uses-facebook-to-rape-women.html., my heart bled for these young women who had to go through such a humiliating and trying time. It prompted me to think and try to come up with an explanation as to why up to 16 young women can be lured to a man`s home at the promise of marriage. What made seemingly intelligent women, befriend a "man of God" on Facebook and trust him enough to have unprotected sex with- "because God says we should"? After all the warning, the news stories even reports of a Facebook rapist on trial in neighbouring South Africa did not deter these young women determined to get married.
I do not prophess to be a religious authority but I think the church is doing a collective sin as a church by preaching to our young women that there is something wrong with them if they remain unmarried, as if marriage is some sort of incredible achievement. One simply has to attend pentecostal church service on any given Sunday and 90%of the time , a preacher says something about how God can make unmarried women to be married. " bata muchato wako!" which literally means get a hold of your marriage, is the catch phrase. Not that there is anything wrong with marriage, in fact it is good, but being unmarried is not always a sign of a curse or some other spiritual problem. If encouragement to get married leads to such desperation then we need to do something about it. Just saying...
