New social media visa-v domination

Habermas' model of the public sphere provides for a media with a double function. It provides a paradigm for analyzing historical change while also serving as a normative category for political critique. So as to prevent a decline to a merely descriptive concept of public opinion, Habermas insists on its emphatic use though he admits of the irreversibility of the historical processes involved.
However justified his assumptions are, public opinion institutionalises itself with the goal of replacing decisionistic secret politics with a  form of domination that is legitimised by means of rational consensus among participating citizens. As such the public sphere is presented as a platform that recognises neither social differences nor societal priviledges.
The public sphere is in this instance allowed to formulate the real and critical issues for public debate because it is clearly distinguished from both the state and the private domain. Just like in the Zimbabwean context when a lot of critical issues are diverted to suit the media houses that they represent, the new social media is a platform for dialogue and interaction without gate keeping sifting information for public consumption. Although there are disadvantages such as the structural disintegration of the classical public sphere and private domain where production and consumption breaks down, social conflicts are reflected and discussed as demands in the public realm and the issue of domination of who formulates news is dissolved.
Very optimistic as i am about the new media, there is however need for moderating some of the issues raised as they can have adverse effects, not only on development but on the societal fabric. Because there is consensus on the content of news that would be circulating in the public sphere, domination by certain members within society is CERTAINLY not possible.
Digital technology is hence a critical component in this new age because it enables citizens to discuss critical issues affecting them openly, although they will be doing it with reservations.
