Using the electronic media to change society's percetion on disability.

People have different views on disability and gender issues due to cultural beliefs, general knowledge and many other reasons that can be caused by lack of understand. As a communicater and a radio broadcaster i use this platform to educate, entertain and inform society on how they can accommodate persons with disabilities. My dream has always been to broadcast talk-shows programmes that give equal, balanced voice that represents reality issues on all affected persons. My shows have opened a world view of what disability is about and how to manage disability for those who are living with a disability. I believe i have changed the mind of society by informing and educating them. I have interviewed radio guest with vast knowledge on the effects of stigma and discrimination attached to disability stems from the way society views disability: People with disabilities are still being viewed from a medical and welfare framework, identifying people with disabilities as ill, different from their non-disabled peers, and in need of care. As a result of the emphasis on the medical need, there is neglect of the wider political, social and economic needs of people with disabilities and their families. Therefore, people with disabilities face discrimination in accessing information, employment, health and education. Recognition of disability rights in these areas would lead to improved inclusion in society as well as equal and stronger participation in all facets of life by people with disabilities. The fight for the promotion and protection of the rights of people with disabilities entails. The programme is aired every Monday on Sfm and it won an award in 2010 by FAMWZ for reporting on gender issues for women with disabilities. I believe the talk-shows have encouraged and inspired many people including myself.

I am now a regular listener of your program on S.F.M every Monday, and thank you so much for such a program. I am someone living with disability for the past 20years after a nasty attack by two thugs who poured acid on my face in 1991. Right now i am totally blind because of the incident and I am getting motivated by your programs especially the one you did on the 14th of November 2011. You were talking to a pastor and his wife whose child was some how physically challenged but because of the grace of God the child was healed. The two couples have got an organization which I can not say at the moment, but please I would love to know more about this couple and if possible get connected. I am a father of three girls and we are a God fearing family. Being physically challenged means a lot of isolation and discrimination according to me and your only best friend might be the radio if you are fortunate enough. Please let’s keep in touch and the Lord richly bless you.
