Who did what?

http://www.thestandard.co.zw/2012/05/20/zvishavane-community-at-war-with-chinese-companies/
Particularly interested in environmental issues, attending the Zimbabwe Environemntal Law Association workshop started just like any other day.Presentations were made and at the end of the day realised there was really no story to tell.
I was thinking; how best do i sell this story to the Editor, when over lunch, i stated interacting with one of the workshop participants; a village Head from Zvishavane.
Protocol observed, its a Village Head i am talking about here and he is old enough to be my grandfather!
"I want to visit you in Zvishavane," i said without really knowing what i was talking about.
"You had better my daughter and see what those Chinese are doing," he said.
Yes my curiosity raised.
"What are they doing?," i quizzed.
"They are like explorers. The only difference is that, they are practically sampling our maize fields and as i speak, the community's fields have been turned into huge pits where soil is taken for sampling as they claim."
Scoop.
Do the story Sofia, said the Editor and that is how it began.
I did the story about the Zvishavane community and although the relevant authorities refused to comment on the issue, the positive thing is that the Chinese have changed how they are doing things.
Speaking to community members from Zvishavane last week at the Zimababwe Alternative Mining Indaba, one village head said the because of the story, the Chinese have actually stopped soil sampling in people' fields.
The Chief, he said was actually very happy that there was meaningful change and as a relevant stakeholder, he was actually being consulted by the local authority before anyone was granted permission to just go and carry out mining activities in his area.
The community's livelihood restored.
Rural communities thrive on agricultural production and to me i felt this was a violation of their rights.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a step.
The environment i love.
Sustained.
For future generation.
