Public Sphere the voice

The media has the power to influenc the public and shape the mind of society. When we look at how people spend their time on social and networking this leaves little space for people to own their life. With social media playing its role Jurgen Habermas states "The public sphere is an area in social life where individuals can come together to freely discuss and identify societal problems, and through that discussion influence political action. It is "a discursive space in which individuals and groups congregate to discuss matters of mutual interest and, where possible, to reach a common judgment." The public sphere can be seen as "a theater in modern societies in which political participation is enacted through the medium of talk" and "a realm of social life in which public opinion can be formed" Persons with disability organisations such as NASCOH and women movements such WOZA have used this platform to lobby for their rights. This has brought change in Zimbabwe. NASCOH states that People with disabilities in Zimbabwe suffer from widespread violation of their fundamental freedoms and rights. They face exclusion from education, employment, cultural activities, festivals, sports and social events and are especially vulnerable to poverty, physical and sexual violence, lack of access to health care, emotional abuse and neglect. Only 33% of children with disabilities in Zimbabwe have access to education, compared with over 90% for the able-bodied populace. The mentioned group of people are now recognised and they have a voice which has  created change in the public sphere. However this leaves little room for positive news because the media has the last say by chosing how they want to report on the stories. Through public sphere persons with disabilities continue to seek for Equalization of Opportunities for people with disabilities, a ground-breaking treaty that targets the creation of opportunities through which people with disabilities are empowered to ensure their active participation in political, economic, social and cultural life, and which Zimbabwe has ratified stories of women and men. Public sphere has many faces that leaves you with a choice on how you want to view the story published.
