The advent of new media

I was fortunate enough to be able to take part in the Essentials of Digital Media Management course at Rhodes University in South Africa. It was quite an experience and I will be sharing some of my experiences in this blog and other platforms. The most scariest thing I learnt on this course, which was one of the first things we learnt in the very first session, media as we know it, is an endangered species.
Just think, people used to buy newspapers to read the latest information, that is news. But now news is everywhere, in fact, as long as you have a cellphone you can get news from anywhere, on demand. Radio is also going obsolete, where people listened to radio to hear their favorite music, but now as long as you have internet access, you can download music for little amounts of money, much less than what cd`s actually cost.
The long and shot of it is that we must, as journalists and media organisations adapt, or agree to die a natural death. Ways and means of adapting is what this course is about and we must embrace it. We need to forget some of those obsolete notions such as holding out information, hoping for a scoop, by the time you want to publish the "news" it might actually be public knowledge!

Ladies, this new media is upon us, lets take full advantage of it.....
